While the world's oldest auction house might be  Stockholms Auktionsverk founded by Baron Claes Rålamb in 1674, auctions have a long history dating back to 500 B.C. when it was considered illegal to sell your daughter by any means other than through the annual bridal auction. Romans sold slaves by auction as well as the spoils of war and debtors auctioned their household goods to meet their obligations. One amazing auction was that of Marcus Aurelius whose debtor auction of household goods apparently went on for months!
